South African motorists are in for a painful start to September, with petrol, diesel and paraffin prices all increasing from Wednesday, 2 September 2026.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced the official fuel price adjustments, with petrol rising by R1.34 a litre and diesel climbing by as much as R3.15 a litre.

The increases come after a sharp turnaround in fuel price under-recoveries during August, driven largely by higher international oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions.

How much will fuel prices increase?

Fuel September increase
Petrol 93 R1.34/litre
Petrol 95 R1.34/litre
Diesel 0.05% R2.94/litre
Diesel 0.005% R3.15/litre
Illuminating paraffin R2.13/litre
LPGAS 69c/kg

The average Brent crude oil price rose from $82.37 to $87.88 a barrel during the period under review.

According to the department, higher oil prices were linked to ongoing tensions involving the US and Iran, uncertainty around oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, rising shipping costs and continued disruption caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The rand provided some relief, strengthening against the US dollar from an average of R16.46 to R16.21. However, the stronger currency was not enough to offset the impact of higher international oil prices.

Slate levy adds to the pain

Motorists will also be hit by an increase in the fuel slate levy.

The levy will rise from 61.38c to 83.28c a litre, an increase of 21.90c/litre, as part of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism.

A further 4.9c/litre has been added to petrol prices to accommodate wage increases for forecourt employees under the Motor Industry Bargaining Council's multi-year wage agreement.
