Why the fuel price changes every month
South African fuel prices are regulated, not set by the filling station. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy adjusts them once a month based mainly on two things: the international price of refined petroleum, and the rand-dollar exchange rate. A weaker rand pushes the price up even when the oil price has not moved.
The rest of the pump price is made up of fixed elements - the fuel levy, the Road Accident Fund levy, wholesale and retail margins, and transport costs. Transport is why inland prices are higher than coastal ones: fuel lands at the ports and has to be moved to Gauteng.
Inland or coastal?
Coastal prices apply in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape coast. Inland prices apply in Gauteng, the Free State, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West. Prices also vary slightly by magisterial district, so the figure at your local station may differ by a few cents.
