iFani

Mzayifani Mzondeleli Boltina, better known as iFani, is a South African Xhosa rapper, songwriter, MC and television personality whose unconventional style, humour and clever wordplay made him one of the most recognisable figures in South African hip-hop.

Born on 20 November 1985 in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, iFani was raised in New Brighton and Motherwell in Gqeberha. His stage name comes from his middle name, Mzayifani, and plays on the isiXhosa phrase “ayifani”, meaning “it is not the same”. 

From engineering to hip-hop

Long before becoming a professional musician, iFani was an academically accomplished student.

He studied Computer Engineering and Computer Science and later worked as a process control engineer at SABMiller. But while working in the corporate world, he was developing another identity — an underground rapper.

Between 2005 and 2009, he participated in hip-hop battles, cyphers and shows while working during the day. 

His life took a major turn in 2010 after losing someone close to him and later being involved in a serious car accident. The experiences convinced him to pursue music full-time rather than continue with engineering. 

The song that changed everything

iFani initially struggled to get his music accepted by radio stations.

His breakthrough eventually came with “Ewe”, a distinctly Xhosa rap song that challenged conventional ideas about what commercial South African hip-hop could sound like.

Despite early resistance from some radio stations, the song gained significant airplay and became one of the defining tracks of his early career. 

His unusual fashion, comedic personality and punchline-heavy lyrics further separated him from his peers.

In 2012, he signed with Sony Music Africa, following the success of songs including “Ewe” and “See Live”. 

“Shake” and the rise of iFani

His follow-up single “Shake” became another major success, debuting at number one on Club 808’s chart in September 2012. 

He subsequently released his debut album, I Believes in Me (1st Quadrant), which earned him the Best Rap Album award at the 2014 South African Music Awards. 

His second project, I Believes in Me (2nd Quadrant), was released in 2015 and was accompanied by an ambitious campaign centred around reaching gold status.

Television

Music was not iFani’s only route into entertainment.

He also moved into television, presenting Stumbo Stomp Amapantsula on SABC1 and later hosting Clash of the Choirs on Mzansi Magic. 

His humour and larger-than-life personality made the transition from rapper to television personality relatively natural.

A difficult decade

Behind the success, however, iFani experienced a prolonged period of financial and personal hardship.

In 2026, he revealed that he had spent more than a decade homeless in Gqeberha after financial problems derailed his career. He said he had been away from music for over 10 years before the unexpected resurgence of one of his biggest songs. 

The story took an unexpected turn when “Shake” went viral on TikTok in 2026, introducing the song to a new generation and helping reignite interest in his music.

The resurgence gave iFani a new opportunity to return to the industry.

He announced plans for a new album and a “Shake” remix featuring artists including Sosoboy Fosho, Gaffi, Khitha Pinca and Musa. 

A comeback story

The renewed attention also brought iFani back into the spotlight.

In a 2026 interview with HYPE Magazine, he reflected on his unconventional image and the way people sometimes underestimated his lyrical ability because of his flamboyant appearance. He described his music as a reflection of his identity, education and Xhosa heritage. 

His story is particularly striking because his career has moved through several dramatically different chapters: computer engineer, underground rapper, award-winning musician, television personality, financial hardship and now an unexpected digital-era comeback.
