MacG

MacGyver Mukwevho, popularly known as MacG, is a South African broadcaster, radio DJ, podcaster, media entrepreneur and author who has played a major role in the rise of podcasting in South Africa.

Born on 6 November 1988 in Gauteng, MacG developed an interest in entertainment from a young age. He attended Hyde Park High School, where his passion for music and broadcasting began to take shape.

A child star at 12

MacG entered the entertainment industry remarkably young.

In 2000, at about 12 years old, he became a presenter on e.tv's youth programme Craze. He remained with the show until 2005, gaining early experience in television and establishing himself as a young broadcaster.

After television, he moved into radio, initially working at Joburg City Community Radio before joining YFM.

At YFM, MacG presented several programmes, including early-morning and lunchtime shows. His career was gaining momentum, but it was also where he experienced one of his first major controversies.

Radio career and controversy

In 2010, MacG was dismissed by YFM following a complaint to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) over offensive remarks. He apologised publicly, but ultimately left the station.

He subsequently joined 947, where he spent several years hosting radio programmes, including the popular 947 Bloc Party.

During his broadcasting career, he also established himself as a DJ and performed at events across South Africa and elsewhere in Africa. He shared stages with international artists and DJs including David Guetta, Diplo and Afrojack, as well as South African names such as Black Coffee and Euphonik.

The birth of Podcast and Chill

The biggest chapter of MacG's career began after he left traditional radio.

In July 2018, MacG launched Podcast and Chill with MacG.

The concept was simple: long-form conversations with celebrities and public figures, combined with humour, pop-culture commentary and an intentionally unfiltered atmosphere.

The podcast initially featured MacG, Ghost Lady and Lenn Moleko. Lenn later left, while Sol Phenduka joined the show and became one of its most recognisable voices.

What started as a relatively small online project grew into a major media business.

Taking podcasting mainstream

Podcast and Chill became known for conversations that traditional broadcasters were often unwilling or unable to have.

Guests have included personalities from entertainment, politics, sport and business, with interviews frequently generating headlines and social-media debates.

The show's willingness to tackle controversial subjects became one of its biggest attractions — but also one of the main reasons MacG has repeatedly found himself at the centre of controversy.

The podcast eventually expanded beyond YouTube and audio platforms, including a television deal with Channel O in 2021. MacG insisted that the move to television would not fundamentally change the show's unfiltered character.

A million subscribers

In 2023, Podcast and Chill reached a major milestone when its YouTube channel surpassed one million subscribers.

MacG described the achievement as something he had never imagined when the podcast began five years earlier. At the time, the channel had released more than 400 episodes.

The achievement helped cement MacG's position as one of Africa's most successful podcast creators.

The podcast has since grown into the wider Podcast and Chill Network, with additional shows and creators operating under its umbrella. Apple Podcasts currently lists hundreds of episodes and the Podcast and Chill Network as the creator.

The business behind the personality

MacG's success has gone beyond simply being a podcast host.

Through the Podcast and Chill brand, he has built a media operation that generates revenue through advertising, sponsorships, branded integrations, digital content and other commercial partnerships.

He has also ventured into other business interests and entertainment projects, while continuing to work as a DJ and broadcaster.

His success represents a broader change in South African media: creators no longer have to rely on television networks or radio stations to build large audiences.

MacG effectively turned his own platform into the media company.

Uncancelable

MacG also became an author with the release of his memoir, Uncancelable: The Rise of MacG.

The book examines his journey through television, radio, controversy and ultimately podcasting, while offering his perspective on the experiences that shaped his career.

The title itself reflects one of the defining characteristics of MacG's public image: his willingness to continue operating outside traditional media conventions despite criticism and calls for him to be "cancelled".

Controversies

Controversy has followed MacG throughout much of his career.

His comments on Podcast and Chill have repeatedly sparked public debates, with critics accusing him of going too far while supporters argue that his unfiltered approach is precisely what distinguishes the show.

Some of his interviews and comments have resulted in backlash from celebrities, organisations and members of the public.

Despite this, MacG has continued to build his audience and commercial footprint.
