Mohau Nkota

Mohau Takatso Nkota is one of South Africa's promising young footballers, whose rapid rise took him from the streets of Kimberley to Orlando Pirates, the Bafana Bafana setup and the Saudi Pro League. Now, at just 21, he is back at Pirates on loan, looking to reignite his career.

Early life

Mohau Nkota was born on 9 November 2004 in Kimberley, Northern Cape. He developed a passion for football from a very young age and began playing competitively as a child. His early development included time at Bophelo Impilo School before he progressed into the Orlando Pirates development system.

His talent was spotted when he was still around five years old by local coach Petrus Motseki Mohapi, who helped introduce him to organised football.

Orlando Pirates breakthrough

Nkota worked his way through the Pirates youth structures and eventually became part of the club's DStv Diski Challenge side.

His breakthrough came during the 2024/25 season, when he was promoted to the senior team.

He made his senior debut against Magesi FC in October 2024, coming on as a substitute. He quickly became an important member of coach José Riveiro's squad.

His first major breakthrough came against AmaZulu, when the teenager scored twice to help Pirates secure victory.

He then repeated the feat on the continental stage, scoring a brace against Algerian giants CR Belouizdad in the CAF Champions League.

The performances made Nkota one of the most exciting young players in the PSL.

A memorable debut season

Nkota's first senior campaign was highly successful.

Orlando Pirates later confirmed that he featured in 39 official matches and contributed 12 goals or assists during his breakthrough season. He also helped the club win the 2024 MTN8.

One of his most memorable moments came in the CAF Champions League, where he scored against MC Alger in the quarter-final first leg to give Pirates a 1–0 victory.

His performances attracted attention outside South Africa.

Move to Saudi Arabia

In July 2025, Nkota made a major career move when Orlando Pirates agreed to his permanent transfer to Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.

The move came after only one full season of senior football in South Africa.

Al-Ettifaq handed the young winger a three-year contract, with the transfer representing one of the biggest steps of his young career.

He made an immediate impression, scoring on his Al-Ettifaq debut in a 2–1 victory over Al Kholood. He also scored in his first few appearances and quickly became a player supporters were excited about.

Life in Saudi Arabia

Nkota's first season in Saudi Arabia was more difficult than expected.

Although he initially made an impressive impact, a knee injury disrupted his campaign and limited his playing time. Adjusting to a new country and a different style of football also presented challenges.

The reduced playing time ultimately contributed to him missing out on South Africa's 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

Despite those difficulties, Nkota remained highly regarded at Al-Ettifaq. In an April 2026 interview with the Saudi Pro League, he described himself as a naturally sociable player who had settled into the dressing room and developed a relationship with experienced players, including former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

Bafana Bafana

Nkota's rapid rise also earned him recognition from the South African national team.

He made his Bafana Bafana debut against Tanzania on 6 June 2025.

He subsequently scored his first international goal during South Africa's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign against Lesotho in September 2025.

By June 2026, Transfermarkt listed Nkota with nine international caps and two goals.

His emergence has been viewed as part of a new generation of South African attacking talent.

Return to Orlando Pirates

On 3 September 2026, Orlando Pirates confirmed that Nkota had returned to the club on a season-long loan from Al-Ettifaq for the 2026/27 campaign.

The move gives the 21-year-old an opportunity to rebuild his confidence and rediscover the form that made him one of the PSL's most exciting young players in 2024/25.

His return also gives Pirates another attacking option as the club looks to compete domestically and on the African stage.

Playing style

Nkota is primarily a right winger and is naturally left-footed. Standing at around 1.67 metres, he relies on acceleration, close control, dribbling and his ability to attack defenders.

His willingness to take on opponents and shoot makes him particularly dangerous when cutting inside from the right flank.

At just 21, there is still significant room for his game to develop.

Personal life

Nkota has generally kept his private life away from the spotlight. He is known publicly primarily through his football career and social media presence.

He has also spoken about enjoying the social side of football and described himself as a "joker", saying he quickly formed friendships with his Al-Ettifaq teammates.
