#RIPUyinene messages have been pouring in on social media after a 42-year-old man has been charged with the rape and murder of UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana, as well as defeating the ends of justice.
The man, who is an employee at the Clareinch Post Office, where Mrwetyana was last seen alive, made his first appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Prosecutor Nomnikelo Konisi informed the court that the accused was charged with rape and murder, as well as defeating the ends of justice.
Konisi said: “Your honour, on the day of her disappearance, she came to collect a parcel at Claremont Post Office. The lights were out and the accused asked her to return later.
“When she returned, he accosted her and allegedly raped her. She fought back and he hit her with a scale.
“The accused later dumped her body in Lingelethu West and took investigators to the scene.”
Following social media reports that Mrwetyana’s remains had been found, police said an autopsy and DNA tests would be conducted on a body found in Lingelethu West, Khayelitsha last Monday.

How do I teach my daughter that she is never safe – not inside a post office, not at school when I drop her off, not playing outside her house, not ever! Crime is out of control and our children are dying. #RIPUyinene #crime #UyineneMrwetyana— Anél Lewis (Ally) (@metroally) September 2, 2019

She wasn't drunk. She wasn't wearing anything provocative. She wasn't being a smart ass. She wasn't walking around at odd hours.— Lady Kuda (@LadyKuda) September 2, 2019
She merely went to collect a package at the post office, during the day.
But she was still raped and killed.
I give up. #UyineneMrwetyana
Imagine going the post office. THE POST OFFICE!!!! 😭😭😭and not coming out alive. We are tired. All of the woman in me is tired. When is enough going to be enough? #UyineneMrwetyana— YT: Zandile Ngobeni (@Zandile08) September 2, 2019
you literally can't make this up. men are a danger to women. a threat. it's got absolutely nothing to do with how we dress; our conduct; the setting. it's them. it's the men that are simply a threat and nothing except reports of murders is being done about it. #UyineneMrwetyana— miranda (@mirandasongo) September 2, 2019
Women aren’t safe in South Africa.— Luke Waltham (@lukewaltham) September 2, 2019
Women can’t even walk down streets without being a target of rape, assault or murder.
We need to do more, South Africa. Time is ticking by.
RIP #UyineneMrwetyana 💔. We will not stop fighting for the safety and emancipation of women
their biggest fear is being called trash and ours is never making it back home safely 💔#UyineneMrwetyana— daniel daley's girlfriend 🥺 (@lumpysunflower) September 2, 2019
