South African youngster Relebohile Mofokeng's Champions League adventure ended in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night as Union Saint-Gilloise suffered a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt.
Mofokeng and his Belgian teammates came within minutes of forcing a penalty shootout, only for Andreas Helmersen to strike in the 117th minute, sending Bodø/Glimt through to the Champions League play-off round with a 6-5 aggregate victory.
For Mofokeng, it was a frustrating night on a stage he has dreamed of reaching.
A thriller from start to finish
After a thrilling 3-3 draw in the first leg, there was little separating the two sides heading into the return fixture at Aspmyra Stadion.
The first half ended goalless, but the match exploded into life after the break.
Ole Didrik Blomberg broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 51st minute before Union hit back through Guilherme Smith 10 minutes later.
Bodø/Glimt regained the lead in the 76th minute when Jens Petter Hauge found the back of the net.
With Union's Champions League hopes hanging by a thread, Mohammed Fuseini produced a dramatic late equaliser in the 88th minute, forcing the tie into extra time.
Mofokeng gets his chance
South African eyes were firmly fixed on Mofokeng.
The 21-year-old was introduced in the 90th minute, replacing Besfort Zeneli, as Union prepared for another 30 minutes of European football.
It was a difficult situation for the former Orlando Pirates attacker. With the game already at fever pitch, Mofokeng had limited time to influence proceedings.
Unfortunately for the South African, it was Bodø/Glimt who produced the decisive moment.
With just three minutes remaining of extra time, Helmersen struck in the 117th minute, breaking Union hearts and sending the Norwegian side into the next round.
A painful night, but another step for Mofokeng
While Mofokeng would have wanted a bigger role on the night, his involvement in Champions League qualification represents another significant milestone in his rapidly developing career.
The South African made the move to Union after establishing himself as one of the most exciting young talents in the country with Orlando Pirates.
He has already enjoyed a taste of success in Belgium, helping Union claim the Belgian Super Cup.
Now he has experienced the other side of European football — the brutal disappointment of elimination.
And there is an important positive.
Union's European journey is not necessarily over.
Their Champions League hopes may have been extinguished in Norway, but their European campaign continues through the UEFA competition pathway.

For South African football supporters, Mofokeng's progress in Europe remains one of the most intriguing stories of the new season.
The youngster is now competing in an environment where every match brings new challenges, higher expectations and greater exposure.
