Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya has been rewarded for his impressive start at Rangers after being named the Scottish Premiership Player of the Month for September.

The 22-year-old South African has wasted little time making his mark in Scotland, with his defensive performances helping Rangers enjoy a strong run of results during September.

Makhanya's award was confirmed on Thursday, 8 October, by the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), following a month in which Rangers won all four of their league matches. The Glasgow club conceded just one goal across those fixtures.

Makhanya shines at Rangers

The former Stellenbosch FC defender joined Rangers from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union during the 2026 off-season.

His transition to Scottish football has been impressive, with the centre-back quickly establishing himself as an important member of manager Derek McInnes' squad.

Rangers defeated Falkirk, Motherwell, St Mirren and Celtic in their Scottish Premiership matches during September, with Makhanya playing a key role in the team's defensive stability.

The award represents a significant milestone for the young defender, who continues to build his reputation in European football after previously making his name in South Africa and the United States.

Rangers celebrate awards double

Makhanya was not the only Rangers representative to receive recognition, with McInnes also named the Scottish Premiership Manager of the Month for September.

The double award reflects Rangers' improved league form and their defensive resilience during the period.

Makhanya expressed his pride at receiving the accolade, crediting his teammates and coaching staff for helping him settle into his new surroundings.

The defender said their support had made a significant difference to his adaptation and development at the club.

Boost for Bafana Bafana

Makhanya's performances in Scotland will also be encouraging for South African football, with the defender continuing to strengthen his credentials at international level.

The former Stellenbosch player has already represented Bafana Bafana, and regular performances in a competitive European league could help him remain in contention for future national-team selection.

At just 22, Makhanya has an opportunity to build on his early success at Rangers and establish himself as one of South Africa's leading defenders abroad.

For now, the September award provides further recognition of his progress as he looks to maintain his form and help Rangers challenge for domestic honours.
