At just 20 years old, Quwan Plaatjies announced himself in spectacular fashion on Friday night, scoring a hat-trick on his Betway Premiership debut as Stellenbosch FC swept aside Marumo Gallants 3–1 at Athlone Stadium.
It wasn't simply a dream debut.
Plaatjies made history.
He became the first player to score a hat-trick on his PSL debut, immediately writing his name into South African football's record books.
Three goals. One unforgettable night.
Plaatjies needed just 13 minutes to announce himself.
Receiving the ball from Tlakusani Mthethwa, the youngster produced a composed curling finish beyond Gallants goalkeeper Kagiso Mlambo to put Stellenbosch ahead.
Then came number two.
In the 28th minute, Plaatjies rose brilliantly to meet a Raoul Daniels cross, producing a diving header to double Stellenbosch's advantage.
And he wasn't finished.
Just nine minutes into the second half, Plaatjies completed his hat-trick with another header from a pinpoint Daniels delivery, taking his personal tally to three goals before the hour mark.
He was substituted in the 66th minute — leaving the pitch with the job emphatically done.
Gavin Hunt sees something special
Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt was understandably full of praise after the match.
And his comparison was a bold one.
Hunt likened Plaatjies to Bafana Bafana legend Mark Williams, describing the youngster as a natural goalscorer rather than simply a striker.
“He is not a striker… he is a goalscorer.”
For Hunt, that distinction matters.
The coach believes natural goalscorers possess an instinct that cannot easily be taught — and Plaatjies showed plenty of that instinct on Friday night.
From the Stellies development system to PSL history
What makes the performance even more impressive is where Plaatjies came from.
The youngster graduated from the Stellenbosch development system, earning his first senior start and immediately rewarding Hunt's faith in him.
His hat-trick also puts him in an exclusive group in Stellenbosch's history.
Only Stanley Muishond and Iqraam Rayners had previously scored hat-tricks for the club, with Rayners famously scoring five against Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership.
