Stellenbosch FC return to Betway Premiership action tonight looking to turn an entertaining opening week into their first league victory, but Marumo Gallants will be desperate to spoil the party at Athlone Stadium.

The two sides meet at 19:30, with both teams still searching for their first win of the campaign. Stellenbosch played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Polokwane City in their opening match, while Gallants were held to a 0-0 draw by Kruger United.

Stellies showed character in Polokwane

Stellenbosch will take plenty of confidence from their opening performance.

Gavin Hunt's side scored three goals away from home and twice came from behind against Polokwane City, eventually leaving Seshego with a point.

For Hunt, the comeback demonstrated the character within his squad, but the Stellenbosch coach will also be aware that conceding three goals is something his team needs to address.

Now playing in front of their home supporters, Stellies will be targeting nothing less than three points.

Gallants searching for attacking spark

Marumo Gallants, meanwhile, began their campaign with a frustrating goalless draw against newly promoted Kruger United.

The result at least gave Gallants a clean sheet, but they will need considerably more attacking threat if they are to leave Cape Town with all three points.

A second consecutive draw would leave them with just two points from their opening two matches which is not the start they would have wanted.

A fixture historically decided by fine margins

There is very little separating these teams historically.

Across their previous 12 meetings, Stellenbosch have won five, Gallants four and three have ended in draws. The goals have been almost perfectly balanced too, with Stellenbosch scoring seven and Gallants eight.

Their most recent meeting in May ended 0-0, highlighting just how difficult these encounters can be to break open.

That could make the first goal particularly important tonight.

Kwayiba looking to make his mark

One player to watch for Stellenbosch is Sinoxolo Kwayiba.

The attacker scored his first goal for the club in the dramatic draw against Polokwane and will be looking to build on that momentum against Gallants.

With Stellenbosch expected to have more possession at home, Kwayiba's ability to create and finish chances could prove crucial.

Gallants have nothing to lose

For Gallants, the challenge will be to frustrate Stellenbosch and make the most of their opportunities.

They know that another strong defensive display could keep them in the game, but they will need to find a way to convert their chances after failing to score in their opener.

The longer the match remains level, the greater the pressure will become on Stellenbosch to find a breakthrough.
