The opening weeks of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership are already producing plenty of talking points, with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns emerging as the early pace-setters.
After Wednesday night's action, both sides sit on 10 points from four matches, while Kaizer Chiefs remain within touching distance on eight points.

🏴☠️ Pirates looking like defending champions
Orlando Pirates remain unbeaten and are top of the table on goal difference.
The Buccaneers have won three of their four matches and have conceded just once. Their latest league win was a 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United, although they also drew 1-1 with AmaZulu earlier in the campaign.
For a team defending its title after ending Sundowns' eight-year dominance, Pirates have made an excellent start.
Sundowns finding their rhythm
Mamelodi Sundowns have also collected 10 points from four games.
Wednesday's 5-2 demolition of AmaZulu was arguably the statement performance of the midweek round. Sundowns had already shown attacking promise earlier in the season, and the seven-goal thriller demonstrated just how dangerous they can be when they find their rhythm.
They will be encouraged by the fact that they are already level with Pirates at the summit despite the champions having started strongly.
Chiefs still in the title conversation
Kaizer Chiefs are third with eight points.
The Amakhosi were held to a 2-2 draw by Richards Bay on Wednesday in an entertaining encounter.
The result means Chiefs remain unbeaten, but they will feel they missed an opportunity to keep pace with the two teams above them.
AmaZulu make a statement despite heavy defeat
AmaZulu's position is interesting. They went into Wednesday's match unbeaten and sitting near the top of the table, but the 5-2 defeat to Sundowns was a major setback.
They remain fourth with seven points, showing that their opening performances were no fluke. The question now is how they respond to their first defeat.
👀 The surprise package: Milford FC
Newly promoted Milford FC have made an impressive start to life in the top flight.
They currently sit fifth with seven points from four matches, including two victories. A newly promoted side sitting above several established PSL clubs this early in the campaign is certainly one of the stories to watch.
🏆 Early title picture
It's still far too early to make serious title predictions, but the first four matches have already produced an interesting three-way picture.
Pirates have the points. Sundowns have the firepower. Chiefs have the unbeaten record.
And with only four games played, the gap between the contenders is small enough for the title race to change quickly.
The next league fixtures aren't until 1 September, when Durban City face Stellenbosch and Kruger United host Orlando Pirates. Sundowns then welcome Milford FC on 2 September.
